Gregoire was a champion of the black race, and wrote a number of tracts as well as two books on the subject: the present title, and another on the Intellectual Capacity of the Negro. Chapter VIII, a good third of the book, is devoted to a number of black writers, among them Phillis Wheatley, Cugoano, Benjamin Banneker, Jacob Capitein, Gustavus Vassus and others with examples of poetry in English.
